Maria Montessori

“Within the child lies the fate of the future”

Maria Montessori was a woman with rare determination, dedication, insight, and persistence. The feature which stands out most forcibly is that of a massive and unassailable strength of character – like a mountain unmoved by the storms which beat against it.

Montessori was one of those rare persons for whom obstacles do not seem to exist. “Character,” says Emerson, “is a reserved force which acts directly by presence and without means.” No words could more aptly describe the influence that Montessori exerted simply by her presence.

She was a woman who stepped out in a time and place that it was certainly outside of the ordinary for a woman to do! The thing she decided to do was unheard of, preposterous, impossible. She was the first woman to attend medical school and the first female Doctor of Medicine in Italy.

A Leading Influence in Modern Education

It was shortly after her graduation that Dr. Montessori was appointed assistant doctor at the Psychiatric Clinic in the University of Rome. It was here that her true life’s work began to evolve – her work with “the child.” Through the course of the remainder of her life, which ended May 6, 1952, in her 81st year, she worked on behalf of the child and humanity for us all. Through her efforts, what is known as the Montessori method of education for children evolved and it has touched and changed forever countless lives.

Without doubt Montessori will hold a place among these “representative persons” in world history. In fact, she may be said to have already secured such a place. No one acquainted with the educational developments which have taken place in this century would deny the paramount influence which Dr. Montessori has already exercised in every country.

Discovering One of the Keys to Humanity

A scientist, and respected by scientists all over the world, she wrote books on the teaching of religion which have won the admiration of the highest ecclesiastical authorities. It is this, too, which has given the movement which she started an appeal as wide as humanity and as deep as the soul of man!

Many regard her then (as many do still) as the founder of a new method of education for small children, the inventor of a new form of Kindergarten, and much more. This is so true. She knew that she had discovered a key which could unlock immeasurable constructive energies for human development. And SHE DID!

What Is This Thing Called Montessori?

To best describe it, think of a kernel of corn. Locked within that kernel lies possibilities and potential. The potential and possibility to become...a full grown, mature, fruit-bearing plant, in all of its magnificence.

In order for it to become that, what does it need? Well, of course, we would say, “Water, sunshine in the right amounts. Then soil nutrients, temperature and depth of placement. Then care in the stages of growth or ‘protection’, if you would.” And I would add, “Faith and patience.” So for these possibilities or potentialities to come to pass it needs the correct environment. We do not teach a seed how to grow.

We do not teach a child how to grow either. The Montessori Method is an environment in which the child best develops the potential ability for the man/woman to come. It is an environment set up specifically for the child. It is designed to take full advantage of the child’s desire to learn and their unique ability to develop their own capabilities.

The Montessori Methods Develop the Absorbent Mind

The Montessori method is designed to nurture abilities.
  • Intellectual abilities
  • Social abilities
  • Emotional abilities
The classrooms are furnished with learning equipment in distinct areas of learning with “hands-on” materials because this is the way that children best “absorb” understanding.

The child possesses an unusual sensitivity and intellectual ability to absorb and learn from his environment which is unlike those of the adult both in quality and capacity.

The child absorbs knowledge from his/her environment simply by living. Adults acquire knowledge with intelligence, whilst the child absorbs with his/her whole psychic life. The impressions not only penetrate into his mind, they form it; they become incarnate.
